SpiceJet to Provide Fliers With Medical Insurance Cover

In the first of its kind, SpiceJet has turned out to be the country’s first airline to provide insurance policy covering treatment for the COVID-19 infection to its flyers. The premium for this insurance cover starts from as low as Rs 443 a year. This move is aimed at encouraging people to use the services of SpiceJet.

The airline has tied up with Go Digit General Insurance Limited to provide the said insurance cover. The insurance plan is said to be a part of Digit Illness Group Insurance Policy. SpiceJet, in a press release, noted that flyers could avail the insurance policy by paying premiums between Rs 443 and Rs 1,564 a year in exchange for the insurance cover ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh.

The insurance policy will cover all expenses related to the treatment of the COVID-19 infection. It covers pre hospitalisation expenses for 30 days and post-hospitalisation expenses for 60 days. The policy also covers medicines, laboratory tests and doctor consultations charges if a SpiceJet passenger tests positive for the novel coronavirus.

As per the MD of the SpiceJet airline, the insurance cover will allow people to travel frequently without having to worry about the hospitalisation expenses on catching coronavirus. The premium for this insurance policy is nominal, the plan is valid for one year, and there is no capping on the ward or ICU charges.

The insurance policy covers all types of hospitals. The process to file claims is very simple and straightforward. Passengers can avail this insurance policy at the time of booking their tickets. They need to check the ‘get insured’ button and enter the requested details along with choosing the insurance cover and premium.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the aviation sector. The lockdown restrictions and the rising number of infections have meant that fewer people are travelling. Now, with the introduction of insurance cover, it is interesting to see how people react.
