Now PAN-Aadhaar linking is possible after 31st March 2020

The current deadline to link your Aadhaar with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is the 31st of March 2020. Beyond this date, your Aadhaar will become inoperative. The income tax department has recently specified the definition of ‘inoperative’ through a notification dated the 13th of February 2020.

According to the notification, if you miss linking your Aadhaar with PAN by the specified date, you PAN will be deemed invalid for furnishing, intimating or quoting. It will be interpreted that you never possessed a PAN and financial transaction requiring the PAN will not be allowed. Also, you might be liable for all the consequences under the Income Tax Act for not furnishing or quoting the PAN.

But, can you link your Aadhaar after the 31st of March 2020?

As per the notification issued by the income tax department, the PAN shall become operative only after the date of intimation of your Aadhaar number. The consequences of not linking the two shall not apply after the intimation date of the Aadhaar number. That means, PAN can also be linked after the deadline but the condition is that it will become operative only after the date of linking of Aadhaar with the PAN.

Individuals can easily link the Aadhaar with their PAN by sending SMS by visiting the e-filing website or by visiting the assigned PAN service centre. It is advised to link your Aadhaar with the PAN by the deadline and save yourself from the consequences.
