Despite some taxpayers and tax experts in India expressing their wish for an extension of the July 31 deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2023-24, the Government remains resolute in not granting any further extension.
Numerous users on social media have made pleas to the Government, urging them to extend the due date. A significant number of them have also expressed frustration over encountering errors on the e-filing website while submitting their returns. Nonetheless, the Income Tax Department maintains its stance that the deadline should not be extended unless there are significant issues with the e-filing portal.
ITR Due Date Latest Updates
Every year, tax professionals consistently appeal for an extension of the due date. Even for Assessment Year 2022-23, a substantial campaign on social media was carried out, advocating for an extended deadline. Certain tax professionals hold the belief the Income Tax Return (ITR) due date should be permanently moved to August 31 instead of July 31.
Various reports have confirmed that the Government has no plans to consider an extension of the due date, even though they empathize with the difficulties people are facing due to floods in certain regions of the country and violence in Manipur. The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) remains unchanged despite these challenges.
Total number of Income Tax Returns Filed
As of July 26, the total number of returns filed indicates that taxpayers should not anticipate any deadline extensions. With five days remaining before the July 31 deadline, individuals who have not yet filed their returns should take prompt action and proceed to file their returns without further delay.
As of July 26, data on the Income Tax e-filing website reveals that taxpayers have successfully filed over 4.75 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
ITRs processed and verified
Until July 26, taxpayers have verified more than 4.2 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs), and the tax department has processed over 2.54 crore returns.
Where to file ITR?
There are multiple options available for filing your tax return. You can file it directly on the e-filing website or utilise the services of a tax-filing website that may charge a small fee for return filing assistance, such as the Cleartax platform.
