The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) issued an advisory on 4th August 2021, stating that the government has decided to block the e-way bill generation facility on the EWB portal from 15th August 2021.
Thus, after 15th August 2021, the system will check the status of returns filed in Form GSTR-3B or Form GST CMP-08 (for composition taxpayers) and block the generation of e-way bills if the taxpayer has not filed the returns.
The system will identify the taxpayers who have not filed two or more GSTR-3B returns up to June 2021, or has not filed two or more quarterly CMP-08 up to April to June 2021, will not be able to generate e-way bill after 15th August 2021. Hence, the GSTN advised taxpayers to file pending GSTR-3B returns/CMP-08.
Earlier, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) had suspended blocking of e-way bill generation for non-filers of GST returns as a compliance relief to taxpayers amidst the COVID pandemic.
It seems that the GSTN has started nudging all the non-filers of GST returns to file returns by blocking the generation of e-way bills as it would disturb the daily activities of the businesses. As the businesses are slowly moving back to normalcy, the department urges them to regularise their GST compliance until June 2021.
The taxpayers can easily unblock the e-way bill generation post-filing of returns. Click here to know how to unblock the e-way bill facility.
