The government clarified that there is no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the funeral, mortuary, burial, or crematorium services. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) posted on Twitter that claims of GST on funeral services were misleading.
However, works contracts issued to carry out work such as construction, maintenance, or installation attract 18% GST. Accordingly, PIB clarified that the 18% GST is only applicable for work contracts alone and not the services.
The government officials confirmed that there is no GST on the funeral, burial, crematorium, or mortuary services and no amendments made in this regard. Also, the official stated that the GST rate increased to 18% on works contracts supplied to the government and the construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, metro, effluent treatment plants, crematoriums, etc.
The department increased the rate to correct the inverted duty structure as inputs such as cement, steel, etc., attract GST at 28%/18%. The official clarified that all other works contracts were already attracting 18% GST. Therefore, a uniform rate of 18% will now apply to all works contracts. Also, the Council took this decision based on a Group of Ministers (GoM) recommendation.
