Equity Schemes Derive 84% of Assets From Individual Investors: AMFI

Equity-oriented schemes derive 88% of their assets from individual investors, which includes retail and high-net-worth individuals, as per the data of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

Institutional investors are making their presence felt in liquid and money market schemes, which stand at 87%, debt-oriented schemes at 60%, and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), Fund of Funds (F0Fs) at 90%.

This aligns with the corresponding figures about a year ago. Equity-oriented schemes derived 89% of their assets from individual investors in January 2023. At 60.1%, individual investors hold a higher share of the pie in mutual fund industry assets in January 2024, as compared to 57.3% in January 2023, as per the data.

Similarly, institutional investors account for 39.9% of the assets, of which corporates are 95%. Indian and foreign institutions and banks form the remaining part of the share.

The share of individual investors in total Assets Under Management (AUMs) of the mutual fund sector has spiked from 57.3% to 60.1% in one year alone.

Individual investors prefer to park more of their money in equity mutual fund schemes while large institutions go in for liquid, debt schemes and ETFs and FoFs, as per the data.

Equity-oriented schemes derive about 84% of assets from individual investors. Similarly, liquid or money market schemes and debt-oriented schemes derive about 55% of assets from institutional investors, as per the data.

Equity funds have become dominant among total mutual fund assets, according to the AMFI data of January 2024. The proportionate share of equity-oriented schemes stands at 56.9% of the industry assets in January 2024. This is higher from 51% in January 2023.

This means, if total mutual fund assets amount to Rs 100 crore, then out of them, Rs 56.9 crore relates to equity schemes. Similarly, a proportionate share of debt-oriented schemes is 17% of industry assets in January 2024. This was lower than 19.3% about a year ago.

In addition, the total assets have surged considerably from Rs 40.8 lakh crore in January 2023 to Rs 52.89 lakh crore in January 2024. This highlights a 29.62% increase in assets.

Meanwhile, the value of assets held by individual investors surged by 35.92% in the past year from Rs 23.39 lakh crore to Rs 31.79 lakh crore. On the other hand, the assets held by institutions spiked by 17.42% and stood at Rs 21.20 lakh crore.
