E-Passbook Facility Introduced For Small Savings Scheme

The government has introduced the e-passbook facility for National (Small) Savings Schemes account holders. Thus, the Post Office Small Savings Scheme account customers can access their account details even without a net or mobile banking access.

A notification by the department of posts issued on Wednesday stated that the competent authority decided to introduce the e-passbook facility from 12.10.2022 to provide enhanced and simplified digital facilities to small savings scheme account holders. The account holders can access the e-passbook facility through their registered mobile numbers without a cost.

E-Passbook Facility Features

  • Balance inquiry – The account holders can view the balance of all National savings Scheme accounts.
  • Mini statement – A mini statement will be available for Post Office Savings Account (POSA), Public Provident Fund (PPF) and Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA). The department will extend this facility to other government schemes in a phased manner. The mini statement will display the last ten transactions, and the account holders can download it in PDF form.
  • Full statement – A complete statement would also be made available in a phased manner. The customers would be able to generate account statements for specified date ranges.

Process of Checking the Balance of POSA, PPF and SSA

  • Click on the e-passbook link available on the India Post website (www.indiapost.gov.in) or the IPPB website (www.ippbonline.com/).
  • Enter the mobile number and captcha code and click on the ‘Login’ button.
  • Enter the OTP sent to the mobile number and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • Select the ‘e-Passbook’ option.
  • Select the scheme type, enter the account number, mobile number and the captcha code and click on the ‘Continue’ button.
  • Enter the OTP received on the mobile number and click the ‘ Verify’ button.
  • Select any of the below options:
    • Balance enquiry
    • Mini statement
    • Full statement
  • The mini statement, balance or full statement will be displayed. The account holders can download the mini and full statements.

The system will show an appropriate error message when the mobile number is not linked to the account. Thus, account holders must link their mobile numbers to their accounts by visiting the post office where they have the account.

Benefits of E-Passbook

The most significant benefit of the e-passbook is that the account holders need not visit the post office to print the passbook or know the account balance. They can access their small savings accounts passbook anywhere and anytime without any cost. Plus, they need not have an internet banking credential or mobile banking app to access the e-passbook since they can access it through their registered mobile number.
