PFRDA Chairman Supratim Bandyopadhyay has mentioned that the subscribers from the retail and corporate sectors have crossed the 30 lakh mark. Also, the overall corpus by the retail and corporate segment has touched more than Rs 97,000 crore and is about to touch Rs 1 lakh crore mark.
The data concerning the NPS subscriber base comprises five categories: state government, central government, all citizen model, corporate, and NPS Lite. The retail customers belong to the ‘all citizen model’ category.
The people from the government sector need to join NPS mandatorily; however, it is optional for the retail sector people. Even though NPS is optional, the number of retail sector people enrolling on NPS is increasing.
Three years ago, in March 2018, the NPS subscriber base was about 13 lakh to 13.5 lakh from the retail and corporate sectors. Nevertheless, as of 14 August 2021, the corporate and retail sectors subscriber base has surpassed three million. So, the subscriber base from both categories has grown more than two times in three years.
Subscriptions under NPS lite were discontinued from April 2015; hence, the subscriber count for this category stands at 42.92 lakh. As of 14 August 2021, the count of corporate subscribers stands at 11.97 lakh versus 6.96 lakh in March 2018. The count of retail subscribers was 6.92 lakh three years ago; now, this number has increased to 18.06 lakh.
