After a crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, some of Congress’ top leaders will deliberate on the losses and assess at the Congress Working Committee (CWC). There are rumours that the party Chief Rahul Gandhi might offer his resignation as well.
This is the second time in a row that Congress has lost to Narendra Modi led BJP. It received only 52 seats in this election.
Murmurs have started in the party overtaking the onus of the defeat across India, with some key leaders such as Raj Babbar and Niranjan Patnaik sending in their resignations.
According to sources, Congress has called the CWC for a meeting on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Rahul Gandhi might submit his resignation at this meet.
UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are supposed to attend this meeting. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar sent his resignation to Rahul Gandhi after Congress won only the Rae Bareli constituency out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The party chief himself lost Amethi to Smriti Irani, the senior BJP leader. Raj Babbar contested for Fatehpur Sikri and lost by a margin of 4,95,065 votes to BJP’s Rajkumar Chahar.
“The results are depressing for the Uttar Pradesh Congress. I find myself guilty of not discharging my responsibility in a proper manner. I will meet the leadership and appraise it of my views. Congratulations to the winners for winning the confidence of the people,” Babbar tweeted in Hindi.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik said, “The party needs to take concrete steps to set the organisation in proper shape by getting rid of opportunists and attracting youths into its fold.”
He said that a committee, led by Narasingha Mishra, has been set up to determine the cause behind the defeat suffered by the Congress in Odisha. In Eastern India, the party won one Lok Sabha seat and nine assembly seats.
According to a report, H K Patil, who headed the Karnataka Congress campaign in December, has quit on moral grounds.
