Chandigarh Ranks #1 in India on the GST Chart

Chandigarh ranks first in the country by registering 89.67% of GST return filing within the initial six months of the present fiscal year (between 1 April 2019 and 30 September 2019).  Chandigarh is leading the GST chart over all other Union Territories and states of the country.

Chandigarh recorded an increase in GST revenue by 10.98% in the initial nine months of the present calendar year versus the corresponding period during the previous year. In the first half of the current fiscal year, Punjab, Gujarat, and Haryana stood at second, third, and fourth positions respectively. The estimated national average stood at 80.1%.

As per records, the Union Territory has about 30,000 GST number holders across various segments. However, the significant areas via which the Union Territory received its maximum GST revenue included screw manufacturers, electronics, automobile, sanitary ware makers, renting of commercial properties, hotels, restaurants, and other industrial units.

Out of the 30,000 GST-registered entities, 12,000 come under the purview of the central government, and the other 18,000 entities come under the ambit of the excise and taxation department. According to records, the Chandigarh administration department has received about 94.70% of the estimated recovery within the first six months of the present financial year. On the other hand, the estimated recovery stands at 84.64% for the Centre; collectively, the average GST collection stands at 89.67%.

A senior officer who has been tracking the entire exercise declared that various teams within the department had been consistently putting efforts to maximize GST revenue collection. He also stated that GST registration numbers were given to a business or company only after a spot visit to make sure an entity exists. The officer expressed that e-way bill implementation has played a significant role in identifying tax evaders.
