Budget Session 2019-20 Announced: 5th July

Parliament’s budget session is likely to be held from June 17 to July 26. The recently appointed finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be presenting the Union Budget for 2019-20 on July 5, making it the first decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet sworn in on Thursday.

The interim budget was previously presented on Feb 1, 2019, by then Finance Minister Piyush Goyal. He has now taken charge of the Ministry of corporate affairs with the Ministry of Railways.

Other notable decisions taken by the cabinet include the following:

  • Election of the Lok Sabha speaker on June 19.
  • Parliaments joint session to be addressed by Ram Nath Kovind on 20th June.
  • Economic Survey to be presented on 4 July.

Last Friday Prime Minister Modi led government was allocated their respective portfolios. Some of the notable announcements include Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah taking charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs from Rajnath Singh, who now heads the defence portfolio.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was made the new external affairs minister while Nitin Gadkari continues his stint as the transport minister.

Both Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely remained in the shadows and opted out of the cabinet citing health issues. Apart from this Maneka Gandhi, Uma Bharti and Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore who were handling notable portfolios were not extended an invited back to the PMO’s cabinet.
