The due date to link Aadhaar and permanent account number (PAN) has been extended to the 31st of March 2020. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced the extension of the deadline through a twitter post followed by a notification.
The statement issued by CBDT stated that “The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961 has been extended from 31st December 2019 to 31st March 2020.”

This is the eighth time in a row that the board has extended the linkage of Aadhaar and PAN for the individuals. Prior to such notification, the due date for the linkage was the 31st of December 2019. The extension has provided relief to those individuals who still have not linked PAN and the Aadhaar due to errors or mismatches in both the documents.
Aadhaar-PAN linking is governed by section 139AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This section states that every individual having PAN as on the 1st of July 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar will have to intimate their Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. Also, if the PAN is not linked to the Aadhaar by the new deadline, then the PAN will become inoperative. However, the board has not yet clarified the meaning of ‘inoperative’ in the laws.
